A statistical study6 on the symptoms of the temporomandibular disorder in the patients with seeking of treatment.

Abstract
214 men and 446 women aged from under 20 age group to over 60 age group were investigated from January, 1987 to October, 1991 in the TMJ clinic of dental infirmary, School of Dentistry, Chosun University.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of selected signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and to observe the distribution of sex and age related to the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1. Men and women with TMD were 32.4% and 67.6% respectively, and the frequency of seeking to TMD treatment to the dental infirmary, school of dentistry was greater in women than in men.
2. The mean age of the patients with TMD was 32.3. and under 20 age group was 15.9%, 20 to 29 age group was 36.2%, 30 to 39 age group was 21.4%, 40 to 49 age group was 11.2%, 50 to 59 age group was 10.3%, over 60 age group was 50%, and therefore
20 to
29 age group was the greatest and over 60 age group was the lowest in the frequency of various signs and symptoms of TMD.
3. In the sex distribution according to age group, women were more higher in the 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59 age group, and men were more higher in the other age group in the frequency of TMD symptoms.
4. In the frequency distribution of each symptom of TMD, mouth opening difficulty was 57.0%, locking was 20.3%, dislocation was 2.9%, clicking was 59.7%, crepitation was 5.3%, stiffness was 18.8%, tenderness was 60.2%, headache was 35.8%, and
among
above things the tenderness was the highest, and the dislocation was the lowest in the frequency of TMD symptoms.
5. In the frequency distribution of TMD symptoms according to age group, the highest frequency of TMD symptoms was the clicking under 20 age group (67.6%), and in the 20 to 29 age group(69%), and was the tenderness in 30 to 39 age group(61%), 40
to 49
age group(67.6%), 50 to 59 age group(69.1%), and over 60 age group(66.7%).
6. In the distribution of age group according to TMD symptoms, 20 to 29 age group was the highest in every TMD symptoms.
7. In the sex distribution according to TMD symptoms, women were more higher in the frequency of mouth opening difficulty(P<0.005), locking (P<0.01), tenderness(P<0.005), and headache (P<0.005), and there wasn¡¯t any significant difference
between
sex
in the other TMD symptoms.
